– Our operations are 100 percent dependent on support from foundations and private donations, so this donation is of great importance to our work, says the leader of Ønskeland, Camilla Bundgaard Astorp.

Ønskeland, located on Øland near Brovst, was established in 2017 as a charity project by the couple Gitte and Jan Vestergaard Olsen. Their mission was to create a safe space for families with seriously ill children.

– Our wish is to make a difference for the families that come here, says Camilla Bundgaard Astorp.

Every year, Ønskeland welcomes around 250 families – equivalent to about 1,000 people – all of whom have illness close to their lives. During the stay of four to five days, they get a break from a daily life marked by illness. The focus here is on creating good experiences in a safe environment for the whole family.

– We cannot remove the illness, but we can help families distance themselves from the challenges of everyday life and give them memories that can provide renewed energy, says Camilla Bundgaard Astorp.

In Ønskeland, the children participate in activities that are always based on their needs and wishes. A team of dedicated volunteers organizes creative and fun experiences such as campfire gatherings, treasure hunts, meditation, visits to a local alpaca farm, or swimming in Ønskeland's own swimming pool.

– For example, the children can visit a nearby farmer and pet cows. It is a special experience for children who otherwise cannot participate in larger events like the annual 'cows on grass' day due to the risk of infection, says Camilla Bundgaard Astorp.

All stays are carefully planned to meet the individual needs of the families – whether it concerns mobility issues, sound sensitivity, or special dietary considerations.

According to Camilla Bundgaard Astorp, a stay in Ønskeland is of great significance for the families.

– For many, it is the first time they experience being able to go on vacation together, eat in the company of others, or participate in communities that for many result in friendships that continue after the stay, she says.
