The paradigm shift
“Believing in young people’s dreams. Supporting them in making those dreams a reality.” That is the motto of the Aarhus-based organization Paradigmeskiftet, which operates on the understanding that new approaches are needed to help young people who are falling through the cracks of the traditional systems.
“For us, the young person’s wishes and dreams are the focus. That doesn’t mean we sit back and do nothing—quite the opposite. We look beyond the framework of the public system and tailor our support to each individual,” says Steffen Rasmussen, director of Paradigmeskiftet.

Paradigmeskiftet is an alternative school offering free courses and mentoring programs in project development, entrepreneurship, technology, and gaming. The school does not receive public funding but is run entirely through donations and companies that sponsor a free spot for a young person. This allows the school to explore new approaches in its efforts to help young people move toward employment or further education.
“It’s a school for young people who don’t fit into the system’s boxes,” he says.
Vulnerable, but not at risk
There is room for 24 students at a time. What they all have in common is that they are not currently in school or the workforce. Many have been diagnosed with a condition, while others struggle with anxiety, depression, or loneliness.
– These are vulnerable young people, but not at-risk ones. Our job is to ensure that they don’t move from vulnerability to being at risk. They all have potential, and our goal is to give them the courage and confidence to realize that potential, says Steffen Rasmussen.

According to *The Paradigm Shift*, approximately 43,000 young people in Denmark are outside both the labor market and the education system. This calls for new solutions—and for an approach in which young people’s experiences and perspectives are viewed as a strength that can be harnessed for the benefit of both the individual and society.
“At Paradigmeskiftet, young people have the opportunity to develop skills, build relationships, and find new directions in life—within a community that embraces both diversity and vulnerability,” he says.
The funds from the Sol og Strand Foundation, Sol og Strand Margit and Kjeld, are to be used for activities that enhance students’ skills, well-being, and social development.
“For many of the students, daily life has been marked by isolation for long periods of time. In this context, shared experiences can be an important step toward greater well-being and participation in the community,” says Steffen Rasmussen.
Among others, Paradigmeskiftet has hosted an HR director who—despite having four diagnoses—manages 200 employees, the author Lotus Turéll, the drummer from the band Carpark North, and the musician Mathilde Falch.
“It helps show young people that it’s possible to make their dreams come true, even if the path to them isn’t always straightforward. At Paradigmeskiftet, we nurture their dreams and give them the tools to make them a reality,” says Steffen Rasmussen.

The paradigm shift took hold in 2024, so it is still too early to assess the full impact of the initiative.
“We’ll receive the first major data set in 2026, but even now we can see that all the students who have completed the program are doing better. They have gained greater self-confidence, increased motivation, and feel less lonely,” says Steffen Rasmussen.
He also notes that, out of a group of 15 young people, two have secured full-time jobs, one has been accepted into an apprenticeship, two have applied for a degree program, three are in internships, while two dropped out during the program. The remaining participants have moved on to a new program with an increased focus on transitioning to an internship, education, or employment afterward.
