– We are working to erect a new signal mast, as the old one is worn out, and we have also had the opportunity to acquire an old fishing cutter from Thorup Strand, Goliat, which we plan to be a gathering place for winter bathers, surfers, stand-up paddlers, and also a destination for the local nature kindergarten and tourists, says Søren Andreas Nielsen from Hjortdal Youth and Sports Association, who is the project coordinator.

Fonden Sol og Strand, represented by Margit and Kjeld, who own Sol og Strand Holiday Home Rentals, supports the project with 15,000 kroner, and the full funding of nearly a quarter of a million kroner is thus almost secured.

– Our wish is to establish a maritime area that complements the existing activities at Han Herred Havbåde and perhaps creates an additional asset for the area, says Søren Andreas Nielsen.

The signal mast was previously used to warn fishermen about how to land their boats with the day's catch when they had been at sea. Unfortunately, time has meant that the original mast had to be taken down, and it has been previously decided that a new mast should be erected to preserve Slettestrand's maritime history.

It is still too early to say when the project will be fully completed. Currently, the association is awaiting the Coastal Directorate's approval of the project, and as soon as it is available, the plan is to start refurbishing the cutter and ensure that it meets current environmental requirements.

Søren Andreas Nielsen is confident that the upcoming activity area will be an asset for both residents and guests.

– We have created a joint project across the area's associations, residents, summer homeowners, and tourists, and that is positive. I have no doubt that the project will support the local associations' work to make the area an authentic and attractive residential area and will be an asset in terms of tourism, says Søren Andreas Nielsen.
