Thanks to a donation of 10,000 kroner from Fonden Sol og Strand by Margit and Kjeld, the trip was made possible for a group of people who otherwise rarely have the opportunity to leave their homes.

– Many of our recipients live in nursing homes or suffer from serious illnesses and have limited access to social and cultural activities, says Anders Øhlers, head of the visiting service in Fjerritslev-Brovst.

Red Cross has previously organized similar trips, including to the Museum of Paper Art in Hune. Experience shows that the feeling of being together outside the home creates both joy and meaning.

– They get away from the daily grind. Just eating something different, being in new surroundings, riding the bus, and meeting other people means a lot, explains Anders Øhlers.

A personal commitment
Anders Øhlers moved to North Jutland from Central Jutland in 2020 and shortly thereafter signed up as a volunteer in Red Cross's visiting service.

– I thought it was a good way to get to know my new local area and make new acquaintances. I have succeeded fully, he says.

Today, he is deeply engaged in Red Cross and visits three recipients each week.

– It has given me the opportunity to meet people I would never have met otherwise, and it has opened my eyes to how differently life can unfold. It means a lot to me to be able to make a difference for another person, he says.

– It can be difficult to make a difference in the world – but here in my local area, I can actually contribute.

Need for more volunteers
Red Cross Fjerritslev-Brovst currently has five active visitors, but Anders Øhlers hopes to expand the corps.

– Visitors reach out to people who do not have family or friends nearby. They are also a valuable supplement to relatives who do not have the time or opportunity for frequent visits, he explains.
